about

Produced, performed, and recorded by Brazen
at various locations in Brooklyn New York
between 1990 and 1996.
All music written by Brazen
except "Baby Sweet" by Brazen & Mark DeAngelis
and "Glad" by Steve Winwood.
Cover shot by Mike Bell.

During the glory years of my life making music in New York from the late '80s up to the mid-to-late '90s, my primary muses were the Ventures and Link Wray. In fact, my first collaborative project, Living Guitars, which I formed with Mark DeAngelis in late '88, was partially intended as a vehicle for the instrumental music I was writing which bore the inspiration of Link and the Ventures. Though this project broke up in 1990, I continued to compose instrumental music despite no longer having a specific project to write it for, and recorded most of it with my then-brand-new Tascam Porta-01 4-track studio (R.I.P.). The majority of these selections have never been made available before, though some were scattered on various rare demo tapes and a few briefly appeared on my oldd Myspace page (again, R.I.P.). Recently, I listened back to a bunch of this stuff and thought I'd compile some of the best tracks into the release you now have in front of you. The quality is unmistakably lo-fi as these mixes were dubbed from old cassettes of varying quality, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't play this loud enough to wake your neighbors!

"The tracks and unfinished sketches on Guitar Flipout! are furious and angular, thoroughly and thankfully disconnected from any of the grunge or alternative rock conventions of that time. They're reflective of a musical mind still restless to this day." -- MATTHEW MOYER, Orlando Weekly
